My Menopause Story

I entered the Intense and final stage of perimenopause around age 48, coinciding with the onset of lockdown and my son's teenage surge of hormonal angst. My symptoms were predominantly emotional—frustration, short temper, and occasional internal rage—alongside brain fog, a sense of disconnect from others, and energy fluctuations. I experienced six-week-long spells of heavy bleeding, which proved exhausting and left me feeling pretty lack lustre. Things got a bit heavy.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), many (but not all ) perimenopausal symptoms stem from Kidney Yin Deficiency, where our bodies overheat due to natual hormonal decline and erratic shifts in hormones.

Our menstrual flow has until now acted as an exit point and served to ‘release’ heat and cool the body, however now that our bleed has subsided we internalize that heat. On the other hand- excessive bleeding can be physically draining and potentially lead to further health complications.

To nurture myself emotionally during lockdown, I engaged in regular activities such as daily Qi Gong and remained committed to my mantra meditation practice. I found great solace in singing, prayer, body movement, breathwork and energy work, which effectively helped me manage anxiety, build my immunity and move toward a more genuine sense of calm. I firmly believe that these practices contributed to supporting my immunity and maintaining the flow of qi/lifeforce during lockdown. The more Qi we have the better our blood flows and circulates.

My mission now is to share what I have learnt through my own experience and knowledge with women going through Peri and Post Menopause.

My Menopause Story

I started into Peri-menopause from around the age of 48 with emotional symptoms such as rage, yep… and brain fog being the main issues that I was aware of. I couldn’t really distinguish whether I was in peri or actual menopause because I had the coil, but I knew I needed support. By the time I phoned the doctor over a year later for some back up I was already over the worst of the transition into menopause and my menses had ceased.. Postmenopause is the absence of periods for a minimum of a year. once you are post-menopausal that’s the term you use for the rest of your life.During this time back in 2019 I also had a consultation with SallyAnn in The Irish Menopause and attended their menopause information classes over Zoom - I would highly recommend SallyAnn and joining The Irish Menopause FB group if you are seeking clarification and support on what menopause and HRT mean. There are also many good podcasts and informative books out there such as Maisie Hill and Dr. Louise Newson.

To support this during lockdown I practiced daily Qi Gong with my teacher John Munro to support my immunity and raise my lifeforce or Qi,practiced and taught Mantra Meditation and underwent training in a Master Course in Menopause and TCM. This course was fascinating to me as it focussed on women’s health and their body types and differentiation of patterns from a Chinese Perspective and recommended different treatment plans including Acupuncture, Flower Remedies, Herbal Tea’s, Herbs that you can take alongside your HRT and Nutrition depending on your constitutional type - a little like Ayurveda but more comprehensive.
